SAXONY, SAXONIESA Yorkshire cloth, used for cheap dress goods, made from wool and cotton mixture yarns, usually dyed. A " Saxony woollen " is a tweed fabric made from botany yarns in many qualities for fine suitings and dresses and is a good quality fabric.

A woollen finish which is more or less close and is not a clear finish, but the cloth has a short pile of fibre left on the face. The operations consist of fulling, rolling, stretching, gigging, shearing, brushing and pressing. -

A fine woollen plain-weave cloth used for underwear; it had few ends and picks in order to give a porous fabric and was made for people with tender skin. -

These are long pile " velvet " carpets. The pile varies from 1/4-in. to 9/16-in. in depth and the pile is 2/3/8's or 2/3/10's worsted yarn, with 9 pile wires per inch. They are 5-frame structures and are carpets of superior softness with great wearing durability. -

SAXONY WHEEL, or FLAX WHEELThis spinning wheel was the next improvement after the Jersey wheel and was run by foot-power and enabled the spinner to twist, draw, and wind without stopping the wheel. The distaff was fixed in the framework, around the spindle was a horseshoe arrangement called a " flyer " which twisted the thread, on the flyer were hooks for spreading the thread evenly on the spindle. The thread was stronger than that spun on the Jersey wheel, and was used for warp, the softer thread of the Jersey wheel being used as weft. These wheels were used from the 14th to the 18th centuries and all yarns for fabric were made in this way. -

Wools of the highest class, their fineness and regularity of fibre is unequalled. They have excellent clothing properties, the fibres are full of serrations, the staple is short, the wool is elastic, having good felting powers and is of good colour. It is used in making the best woollen fabrics. -
